Scope and Contents
Hawkins was an English anatomist, osteologist and paleontologist, but apparently confined his interests to skeletal aspects, stressing comparative osteology as an approach to artistic representations. One paper appeared in the Academy's Proceedings for 1874, "On the Pelvis of Hadrosaurus", and another in New York in 1870 on Ichthyosaurus. These eight colored proofs of fishes were laid in a copy of John Edwards Holbrook's Ichthyology of South Carolina (1860). The plates for this edition were done by A. J. Ibbotson and Antoine Sonrel and colored by Jacques Burkhardt. These loose proofs were possibly intended for the second volume, which was never published. The plates are labeled as follows: Plate 1.
